Client Eligibility

Eligibility for Employment Training

In partnership with Human Resources and Social Development Canada, Treaty 6, and Treaty 8 , Oteenow Training & Employment Society (Oteenow) helps eligible First Nations and Inuit people find meaningful, long-term employment in Edmonton and area by accessing funding for training. To qualify for sponsorship you must meet all of our eligibility criteria and submit your application a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks before the start date of your desired program.

Eligibility Criteria

There are a number of factors that determine whether or not you can access Oteenow training services. At the minimum, both you and your career plan must meet the Primary Eligibility Criteria as stipulated under the federal government’s Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASETS). To qualify, clients must:

  • Be a First Nations or Inuit person residing in our Geographical Service Area. Proof of address is required (government ID, mail, etc)

  • Be unemployed or underemployed (unable to support themselves with income from current employment), or be in a situation where employment is threatened

  • Be entering an occupation where there is a reasonable opportunity for achieving self-sufficiency (there is demand for the occupation and the wages the client is likely to receive will support the client and his/her dependants)

  • Commit to an action plan developed with our employment counsellors that shows the proposed training is an appropriate step that will lead to suitable employment.

Only full-time, short-term training (twelve months or less) resulting in certification can be considered for funding by Oteenow. While some exceptions may apply, upgrading will not be considered an eligible program.

For administrative reasons, Oteenow Employment & Training Society reserves the right to refuse applications for funding made less than 3 to 4 weeks prior to the start date of the training. This refusal cannot be appealed.

Intake Process

Upon Intake the client must provide the following required documentation before they are able to move forward to access Oteenow training services.

Intake will be from Monday – Thursday: 8:45AM – 12PM, 1PM – 4:00PM
